Sequenza Trio: The Music of Versailles

  • 9B Studios 9 Burnett Street New Norfolk, TAS, 7140 Australia (map)

The afternoon concert will feature music by composers at the Palace of Versailles during the golden age of Louis the XIV. Composers at the Royal Court included Marin Marais, François Couperin and Robert de Visée.

Sequenza was formed in 2015 and enjoys a mixture of contemporary music on early instruments and early music from the 16th and 17th centuries that is ideally suited to smaller halls and more intimate surroundings. For this tour Sequenza will play as a trio with Brett Rutherford on viola da gamba, Matt Goddard on percussion and David Malone on lute and classical guitar. Sequenza’s members are professional musicians based in Hobart. Brett Rutherford began his career as a cellist in Sydney’s Elizabethan Orchestra and then studied in London before accepting a full-time position with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Matt Goddard began on drum kit and subsequently studied percussion and timpani at the Victorian College of the Arts. He was a member of a number of ensembles in Australia and Japan before joining the TSO and returning to his home town of Hobart. Originally from Sydney, David Malone majored in guitar at the Canberra School of Music at ANU with further studies in Europe, including at Santiago de Compostela in Spain. On returning to Australia, David moved to Tasmania to coordinate the guitar department at the UTAS Conservatorium of Music.
